Saturday was definitely a day when the occasion seemed more important than the football as supporters arrived to mark the end of an incredible 20-years service to the Trawlerboys by Jamie Godbold.
The former player and current manager started a new career at Ipswich Town this week, writes Terry Lynes.
On a damp, dreary afternoon the football on display did little to raise spirits.
There was plenty of effort on display but little quality. Lowestoft were dominating possession but had few chances of note.
Sam Johnson saw an effort saved one handed by Elliott Taylor but blazed the rebound high over the bar.
Harry Barbrook, playing in central defence, looked comfortable in that position and took the chance to surge forward 40 yards before being brought down just outside the area but Harvey Sayer’s free kick was deflected wide
Little had been seen from Harborough as an attacking force but a raid down the left ended in Connor Kennedy’s near post flick ending up in the side netting.
The game changed completely in the second period as Harborough took control but without causing the home defence too many problems.
Kennedy shot wide from the edge of the area and Jutorre Burgess from distance suffered the same fate.
Leading scorer Ben Stephens had the best chance of the game as he broke through the Trawlerboys defence but young Ronnie Yeo raced from the goal to dive bravely at the feet of the striker to claim the ball.
Two free kicks in close succession were dealt with easily by the home defence.
Lowestoft were having difficulty in mounting attacks in this half but having forced a corner Joe Duffy’s flag kick picked out Kyle Haylock’s run but his header went straight to Taylor.
Yeo failed to hold the ball in a high clash with Stephens but Tendai Daire blazed high over the bar from four yards out.
The moment everyone had been waiting for arrived in the 82nd minute when Sayer made a strong run goalwards only to be brought down just outside the area by Amar Sandhu.
Sayer got up and did what Sayer does best – send the free kick screaming into the top corner of the net to win the game and give Godbold a fitting finale.
Charlie Norman was dismissed in added time having collected a second yellow card.
