Trawlerboys hit back to progress in Emirates FA Cup

Eager to redeem themselves after the abysmal midweek display, Lowestoft produced a thrilling performance last Saturday against St Neots Town in this Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round clash, writes Terry Lynes.

The Trawlerboys twice came from behind with two second half goals sealing progress into the next round.

In a fast end to end opening St Neots’ lively wide men Connor Furlong and Harvey Williams looked particularly impressive.

It was the latter who created the first chance but blocks from Ben Self and Harvey Peters denied the visitors.

The reprieve was shortlived though as St Neots opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Williams was again the architect cutting in from the left to set up Christian Tavernier who had plenty of time to pick his spot from 12 yards.

Falling behind in virtually the same minute The Trawlerboys had capitulated in midweek, instead Lowestoft hit back to level the scores two minutes later.

From a Mitchell Belmar free kick keeper James Goff failed to hold Peters downward header and Kyle Haylock prodded home from close range.

Aaron Bullent saw his effort deflected into the side netting, Williams burst through but shot wide and Haylock’s volley was high as play continued to flow back and forth.

St Neots took the lead a second time six minutes before the break but there was a touch of good fortune about it as a Sam Willis free kick from wide on the left bounced through everyone without getting a touch to leave Self flatfooted as the ball clipped the far post before entering the net

If the first half had been evenly matched the second certainly belonged to Lowestoft as Bullent took centre stage with an all action display.

He levelled the scores in the 53rd minute clipping a flick on from Peters over the keeper following a Dylan Ruffles free kick.

Within a minute his header from a Belmar free kick was held by Goff but he was not to be denied for long.

Just 3 minutes after his equaliser he scored what proved to be the winner. Hustling Robbie Parker, he nipped the ball away, raced forward and from 18 yards sent a delightful drive curling around Goff into the far corner.

There was almost a fourth for Lowestoft 10 minutes from time when a Belmar free kick seemed destined for the top corner until Goff got a hand to it to turn it into the side netting.

Bullent limped off to a standing ovation deep into injury time, before receiving the man of the match award after the game.
