Jimmy enjoyed a Football League career of 190 appearance, scoring 52 goals, with Leicester City, Norwich City, Northampton, Darlington and Workington.
Jimmy was appointed Lowestoft’s player coach in July 1966 with the difficult task of continuing the successes under Noel Kinsey. Under Jimmy’s influence Lowestoft enjoyed an outstanding season winning the Eastern Counties League, League Cup, Suffolk Premier Cup and reaching the !st Round Proper of the F A Cup and an away tie at Leyton Orient. That season Lowestoft scored an incredible 231 goals in 55 competitive games. Dismayed an being refused permission to talk to Workington and a return to the Football League in December 1966 he was suspended for a month by the committee for refusing to travel to a league game at Boston Town. Jimmy saw out the remainder of his contract but left at the end of the season.
After helping Gt Yarmouth Town wrestle the league title away from the Crown Meadow in season 1968/69, he returned to Lowestoft as player manager in 1969 and would retain that position until January 1971 when he resigned over a matter of principle. He returned the following season as a player only under Jim Oliver and an eventful season saw him survive a fatal coach crash in January 1972 before his season came to an abrupt end on 3rd April 1971 when he assaulted the referee after being sent off. As well as receiving a suspended prison sentence he was suspended sine die by the Football Association.
8 years later in 1980 after his suspension had been lifted he was appointed manager for the 3rd time but with fortunes and finances falling he had to rely on more local players bringing through a number of excellent youngsters as well as making a further 3 appearances himself as a 46 year old. A run of poor results in October 1981 saw him sacked and replaced by John Rudd.
Jimmy made a total of 170 appearances in the blue shirt scoring 42 goals and winning 3 League titles, the League Cup and Suffolk Premier Cup with the Blues.
Rest in peace Jimmy
