Rare week off for Trawlerboys ahead of busy spell

Rare week off for Trawlerboys ahead of busy spell

Mark Boggis27 Oct 2023 - 06:00

Lowestoft prepare for five league games in 14 days next month

"We know that we now have a group of games against a lot of the teams in the top half and at this stage of the season the league starts to take shape."
- Lowestoft manager Jamie Godbold

Lowestoft Town FC have a rare break from action in the week ahead, as they prepare for a busy spell of games next month.

The table topping Trawlerboys are a point ahead at the summit of the Pitching In Isthmian League North Division after a dominant 2-0 home win over previous second placed side Bowers & Pitsea last Saturday.

While Jamie Godbold's men are without a game tomorrow (Saturday) and next week, they face a run of five league games in 14 days at the start of next month.

A home game against Heybridge Swifts on November 4 starts the busy spell, ahead of a trip to Redbridge on Tuesday, November 7 and a visit to Norfolk rivals Wroxham on November 11.

Home encounters with Walthamstow on Tuesday, November 14 and Witham Town on Saturday, November 18 follow.

A brace from striker Jake Reed in the ninth and 35th minutes at the Fosters Solicitors Community Stadium last Saturday sealed a man of the match display from the hitman - but Blues boss Godbold hailed a superb showing from the whole team.

Godbold said: "I thought we were excellent, particularly first half.

"We made a good side look very ordinary and were great all over the pitch.

"In and out of possession was good, defensively across the pitch we were excellent and our transitions were great.

"We got off to a good start with two goals from Reedy and in the second half we expected them to come out at us, but we soaked up all their play and I felt we looked really comfortable throughout.

"In the first half I felt it was one of our best performances over the past couple of seasons.

"We passed the ball well and did not give them an inch in what was a really good performance.

"Had it not been for their goalkeeper, who was their man of the match, it could have been four or five."

Of Reed's display, Godbold added: "Jake will take the plaudits with two superb goals.

"He is in my opinion by far the best, the top striker in this league and we are delighted to have him.

"But as a group, collectively I thought we were really good. I can't remember Luke having to make a save and that is down to his organisation and the back four who were mobile and aggressive.

"We now have a rare Saturday off, and it is probably a bit half and half - in that we wanted to build on beating the second placed team in the table with another game having been lifted by that result, but also we are struggling a little bit with a few knocks.

"So the break has come at a bit of a good time knowing we can have a break ahead of four games in 10 days at the start of November.

"Sam (Johnson) has been struggling with a hamstring problem, and while he probably would have been fit this week, the extra will do him good.

"Reedy is another one that needs a bit of a rest, while Owen Murphy will have another two weeks recovery - so he is now probably three weeks away in recovering from the dislocated shoulder."

So, with a rare week off, what does that mean for the management team?

Godbold said: "We will have a look down the list of games, and then if there is a game nearby involving a team who we will be coming up against soon, and the opportunity is there to watch them, then that is an option.

"The reserves are also in action and that is a chance to see what is coming through - so it is a chance for us to prep for the weeks ahead.

"Starting that off at home on Saturday, November 4 against Heybridge Swifts and dependent on the results in the coming days it could be a clash of the top two.

"Ever since the season started I felt that Heybridge are the team to beat in the division - so it is a home game that is not to be missed.

"We then travel to Redbridge on a Tuesday night, and they have had a good start to the season.

"We know that we now have a group of games against a lot of the teams in the top half and at this stage of the season the league starts to take shape."
