Andy Reynolds urges young squad 'to remain competitive' ahead of challenges to come

"The focus has to be on ourselves and giving it our all."
- Blues boss Andy Reynolds

Lowestoft Town manager Andy Reynolds has urged his young side to maintain focus and to keep concentrating on themselves as they prepare for their first home game on a Saturday in 2025.

The Trawlerboys are back in action at the Fosters Solicitors Community Stadium for the third successive match tomorrow - but for the first time on a Saturday this year - as they host 11th placed Stourbridge.

The Glassboys - who are three points and seven places ahead of Lowestoft - were Andy Reynolds first opponents for an away match as Blues boss, as The Trawlerboys lost 4-0 on November 9.

After two wins either side of the new year, Lowestoft have suffered back-to-back Tuesday evening home defeats over the past fortnight.

And the Blues boss reflected: "My thoughts are probably that is where we are at the moment with a smaller, stretched squad.

"We are going to win some and we're probably going to lose some.

"As a football club - management, officials, fans and players - we have to ride the waves.

"After two good wins, we've had two defeats at a time when we've a smaller, stretched squad.

"We have to ensure we stay in the fight as no doubt this is a strong level we are coming up against.

"We have to be competitive and be up for the challenge against good sides in this league.

"The boys know we have to remain competitive as much as possible as we can in games.

"As players come back from injury that will help to add depth to the squad, and we are trying to work on things to add quality to what we have got as well with calls and loan bids having gone on.

"Hopefully we can rack up more wins and more draws than losses and we can see the points going on the board.

"We are in a reasonably good position when you look at the fact that we have still got plenty to play for and we are in a group of teams in the table that are really close."

However, the Blues boss has been quick to add caution to his young squad.

"That is where we try and encourage the players not to use the league table as a barometer of where we are, or where our opponents are," Reynolds said.

"For example, Alvechurch were beneath us in the league table but in reality they had not played for a number of weeks, so things can change so quickly with wins in this league.

"We know if we win our game in hand and beat the teams around us, which we are well capable of doing, then it all looks a lot different.

"The league table is tight and it is not the best measure of how each team will play on a given day.

"So we need to just focus on ourselves, get the unavailable players back to us and we are hoping to add quality to a fairly small senior squad so that hopefully over time we get enough points on the board that we are not overly concerned about where we are."

Admitting that they "well beaten" by a very good Stamford AFC side on January 7, Reynolds said: "They were a strong team, who are up there, and they're full of men, senior players and we have to rise to that.

"With Saturday called off, there wasn't a chance to respond quickly, and so we went into Tuesday.

"But all the best laid plans of how we want to start the game goes out of the window with an error early on.

"This affected us and mentally it took time to recover.

"I felt that the timing of each one of their goals came at important parts of the match and hit our confidence.

"We have got to realise that no single result is going to be fatal and no single win is going to lead to prizes, so the focus has to be on ourselves and giving it our all."

After 0-3 and 0-4 defeats this month, Blues boss Andy Reynolds added: "We have to keep focussed week to week on who we face, how we set up, and give our all.

"If we do that more often than not then I believe that this group do have enough.

"To have amassed 30 points already shows what we are capable of.

"The Banbury, Barwell and Redditch wins show that we can go to sides and cause problems."

Goalkeeper Sam Blair and experienced duo Owen Murphy and Rob Eagle have missed recent games through injury, but Reynolds is hopeful the former two will be in contention to return to the squad as they host the West Midlands outfit tomorrow.

Of the Stourbridge test, Reynolds said: "We know they will be a tough outfit, but we have got to show we have grown from that defeat in November and we really have to stick together, go again and build to the point of putting mini runs together.

"The lads know we are more than capable of doing that, as the two games before the two defeats show.

"We are still looking to bring in one or two players to help us and give us options, so that we are not putting as much pressure on the some of the young boys - who are playing out of their skin to keep up to this level.

"Some of the people we have been looking at bringing in are not available at the moment, but we are also awaiting news on Josh Hazell's meeting with the consultant on his knee injury and Travis as well, with Murph (Owen Murphy) and Eags (Rob Eagle) to come back too.

"I am pleased to have Jesse in, he has been thrown in at the deep end on night one of signing (on loan from Ipswich) and he can really help us.

"We are now seeing teams for a second time as we play the reverse fixtures, and we have to show how much we have learnt and start to improve on the performances from those games."
