A stoppage-time header from Dexter Lee sparked scenes of jubilation at Crown Meadow as Lowestoft Town U18s secured a dramatic 3–2 victory over Downham Town in the Preliminary Round of the FA Youth Cup.

The Young Blues twice came from behind before Lee’s last-gasp winner sealed their place in the First Qualifying Round in front of 126 supporters.

Early Goals at Crown Meadow

Lowestoft made the worst possible start, falling behind inside the opening 30 seconds. An error in midfield allowed Downham to break in behind, and the visitors took full advantage to catch the Young Blues cold. However, the response was immediate. Just four minutes into the contest, Logan Longmore arrived at the back post to finish and bring Lowestoft level. From that point, the Young Blues took control of the first half. They applied relentless pressure, dominated possession and created numerous opportunities, but were unable to convert their superiority into further goals. Despite Lowestoft’s control, the two sides went into the interval level at 1–1.

Downham Retake the Lead

The second half developed into a much cagier contest. Lowestoft struggled to rediscover the rhythm and intensity of their first-half performance, while Downham managed the game well, slowed proceedings down and made it difficult for the hosts to build momentum. On the hour mark, the visitors were awarded a penalty and converted from the spot to restore their lead. The Young Blues continued pushing forward, knowing that their FA Youth Cup campaign was at risk of ending at the first hurdle. Their persistence was finally rewarded in the 80th minute when Gabriel Hind produced an excellent strike to make it 2–2.

The Late, Late Show

With the game moving into stoppage time, Lowestoft continued searching for the winning goal. Callum Lake delivered a looping corner into the penalty area, where substitute Dexter Lee attacked the ball at the front post and powered his header into the net. The final-minute winner sparked incredible scenes of celebration among the players, staff and supporters as the Young Blues completed a dramatic comeback and booked their place in the next round. It was a fitting reward for the group’s persistence, character and refusal to accept defeat.

Player of the Match

Lowestoft captain Aiden Chirimunjiri was named Player of the Match following an outstanding performance in central midfield. Aiden demonstrated tireless commitment throughout the contest and continued driving his team forward in their pursuit of victory. He was presented with the award by our match sponsor, Lauren Lou Storage Facilities.
