Trawlerboys bow out of Isuzu FA Trophy

Lowestoft Town were knocked out of the Isuzu FA Trophy last Saturday but Jamie Godbold’s depleted squad did the club proud, writes Terry Lynes.

Despite being without two thirds of their normal strikeforce, Lowestoft stunned their hosts by taking the lead in the sixth minute.

Kyle Haylock played the ball on to Harvey Sayer on the right and the youngster cut inside leaving two defenders in his wake before firing low past Nathan Harvey from 20 yards.

Lewes levelled the scores in the 12th minute with a very similar goal as Marcus Sablier’s 20 yard rocket screamed past Luke Holt.

As to be expected the hosts from a higher division were having the major part of possession but The Trawlerboys were battling hard.

However, they fell behind in the 29th minute.

A bizarre 30 seconds saw a right wing corner firstly headed against the post, the rebound headed against the bar before at the third attempt Tommy Wood nodded the ball over the line from a yard out.

Robert Eagle tried his luck from the edge of the area and at the other end it took a headed clearance off the goal line by Dan White to prevent Lewes from increasing their lead on the stroke of half time.

Lowestoft started the second half strongly with Sayer again causing problems before shooting into the side netting.

A Louis McIntosh corner saw Travis Cole scoop the ball inches over the bar.

Sam Johnson and Haylock were also worrying the home defence.

To add to Lowestoft’s woes Dan White had to limp off in the 74th minute being replaced by Sam Aldous with the teenager so close to playing Haylock clear on goal.

Lowestoft’s resistance was finally ended seven minutes from the end with a controversial free kick awarded by the referee a couple of yards outside the area.

Harvey Hughes sent the free kick low around the wall and just inside the post.

To rub salt into the wound a defensive mix up between Holt and Dylan Ruffles presented Lewes with a fourth goal in the final minute.
