Lowestoft Ladies win East Anglia Super Cup

Lowestoft Ladies won the East Anglia Super Cup on Sunday after beating East Midlands Premier Division side Peterborough Northern Star on penalties

Lowestoft Town Ladies welcomed last seasons East Midlands Premier Division winners Peterborough Northern Star to compete for the "East Anglia Super Cup" at the Crown Meadow last Sunday, with the format being a best of three matches; each of forty minutes.

Lowestoft Ladies were the 1-0 victors in the first match following a well taken corner by Chloe Hoffman which found Natasha Thomas, whose well directed headed effort found debutant Millie Davis on the six yard line and her header found the top right hand corner of the net.

The second match deservedly went to Peterborough Northern Star, also by the score of 1-0 with a well struck long range effort which gave the keeper no chance .

Both of the first two matches were very competitive with few chances as both defences were very well organized and dominant. The Lowestoft defence in particular was marshalled magnificently by Megan Cletheroe who had an outstanding game.

The third match was a completely different affair, with both teams beginning to tire and as a result the game got more stretched and gaps started to appear in both defences. Peterborough Northern Star took the lead on eighteen minutes but Lowestoft were not deterred by this setback and despite wilting in the heat, were showing great resilience and applying lots of pressure on their opponents defence. On twenty-eight minutes a fine through ball from Natasha Thomas found Beth Turner who unfortunately could not get her well struck effort on goal but when the equalizer did come, it was a stunning goal. Chloe Hoffman received the ball deep in midfield and hit a thunderous shot from fully forty-yards which dipped just in time to find the roof of the net with eight minutes of the final match to go.

As a result of a win for each side and then a draw in the final match, the trophy was ultimately decided by penalties and Chelsea Clarke, Natasha Thomas, Chloe Hoffman, Aimee Durrant and Millie Davis all scored with their spot kicks to give Lowestoft a 5-4 win with Peterborough Northern Star having their second spot kick well saved.

It was a really enjoyable afternoons football with the three matches played in a great spirit. Thank you to all three officials who did a great job and to Peterborough Northern Star who played their part in full. Finally I would like to wish Amy Bell a very speedy recovery following her freak accident whilst kindly running the line.
