Chapman doesn’t want long journey to Hastings to be wasted

Lowestoft Town joint manager Micky Chapman is confident the Blues can make the long trip to Hastings tonight a worthwhile journey.

The Blues have suffered their worst run of results this season in recent weeks, with two defeats and a draw in the league alongside a League Cup semi-final defeat at Bury. They have slipped 10 points behind Ryman Premier Division leaders Billericay and tonight sees them play one of their three games in hand on the Essex side. Chapman insists he is not worried about the prospect of Lowestoft making their longest away trip of the season on a Tuesday night: “We don’t look at it like that,” he said. “You’ve got to go to these places. It is a long trek, but you’ve got to get on with it, there’s no point in moaning about it.

“Of course it would be better for us if it was on a Saturday, but that’s the way the fixtures have come out and we’ll be going there to try and win the game.”

The Blues will monitor the fitness of defender Scott Mitchell and striker Matt Nolan, who both came off in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Hendon with tight hamstrings. Greg Crane has the same injury and Chapman added: “The physio is working on the injured players and we’ll assess them, but whatever happens we’ll be taking a strong squad. None of the players have pulled their hamstrings, they are just a bit tight and you have to be really careful with that type of injury.”

Chapman believes the Blues were unlucky to lose on Saturday, but he admits there is room for improvement: “We can sharpen up mentally in the attacking third and in our defending as well,” he said. “We are all aware that we’ve got to stop giving silly goals away.

“But we’ve got a good quality bunch of players and we’ve all been around long enough to know that you have spells like this.

“We’ve still got a third of our games left and if we stick together, things will turn.”
