Talking to... Leatherhead

Ahead of this Saturday's season opener at Leatherhead, I contacted my opposite number, Press Officer Alfie Gates, and found out more about his club.

How has Leatherhead's pre-season been?

Good question, it started off with a win against Corinthian with four goals being scored by Tanners. The next day, we had Bromley at home and lost followed by Woking which we confidently drew, with Sheppey Utd away (meaning we had four games in just six days) things started shaping up after that 3-0 win.

We then had a trialist game a week later against Canterbury which we horribly lost 4-1, the next game then went bad as well as we drew to Glebe away from home, 1-1 with a late minute equaliser from ourselves. However since that game, we've had three matches, against Hayes & Yeading Utd, Godalming town & Basingstoke Town FC in which we have scored 11 goals overall and conceded only one!

It's got to be an 8/10 pre season for me, it's been a little dull as there's been no competition but Sammy (Moore) has signed a few good trialists as well as bringing in some big names.

Has Sammy Moore settled in well since replacing Jimmy Bullard?

Better than expected is what comes to mind when you read that question. Sammy is excited about being a player/manager, he's always speaking to me with ideas on how the club can gain publicity off the field as well as on the field. He's always happy to speak to the media despite the result, he's listening to the fans view and he's very honest about the club which is great.

Were the Leatherhead fans disappointed to lose such a personality as Bullard as their manager?

Yes, without a doubt I was as well. Jimmy was kind to us all and it was an honor to have him at Leatherhead Football Club so instead of seeing the negative side of him leaving, we should think that we were incredibly lucky to have someone like him as our manager.

What have you made of Leatherhead's summer transfer business?

Phenomenal. Sammy's brought in lots of ex-AFC Wimbledon players which he won the league with. He's brought in other Football League players like Sean Clohessy & Harry Girling (loan). Furthermore, he's brought in non-league players who've had experience in this league, e.g. Chike Kandi and funny enough Chike Kandi has scored eight goals in eight games in pre-season!

What do you feel Leatherhead's aim for the season is?

I can't really say what it is on behalf of the club as I don't know but we've got to look at the bigger picture and think yes we've signed great players but we've got teams like Margate, Dulwich and Billericay who'll get the top three. I'd like to say bottom end of play-offs would be my realistic target.

Which player should Lowestoft keep an eye on?

Can't say for tactical reasons pal ?

What do you make of Lowestoft?

Lowestoft is a great club, I've always been impressed with their stadium & especially their press box which in my view is the best in the league! They're always a big team in this league and it's a shame they're not in the league above where they should be.

Which Lowestoft player did you wish played for Leatherhead and why?

Not a clue what his name was but your keeper last season was quality from what I saw and heard.

Score prediction?

It's gonna be a big attendance, strong sides and not many goals in it. I'm going to say 1-0 to Leatherhead, it's going to be tight!
