Sean Galea-Pace catches up with scholars captain and first team player, Cion Wren, about pre-season, the scholarship system and the season ahead.

How did you feel your pre-season preparations set you up for the season?
It’s been good to get to know all the new players coming in, all the new faces in and around the changing room has been a nice change. I feel like we’ve had a good pre-season as we’ve won most of our matches and I think it’s set us up for the start of the season now.

How can you use the experiences that you faced in your debut season last year and really bring it into this one?
I think it was a massive learning curve for me and for everyone else that was at the club. I feel it’s made me more mature as a player, I now know how the league works and what you’re expected to do. I feel I can really push on this year and beat my appearance total from last season.

As well as being involved in the first team, you captain the U19 squad too. How do you find you’re able to combine both roles?
Anything that I learn from playing with the first team, I try and utilise that experience into the scholarship set-up and help the other lads learn what it’s like. The main thing is that the team plays well and hopefully, we’ll see more of the scholarship lads pushing for the first team as a result.

Do you think that’s the way forward for Lowestoft? To try and develop scholarship system and try and bring them into the first team?
I think that’s the way forward and how Godders and Reyns have started since they’ve been here. Young, local talent from around the area for the first team and then pushing the scholarship forward as well has been the main aim for the club.

How much of a difference is there about Godders and Reyns compared to previous managers that you’ve worked with?
I think there’s a massive difference. They’ve brought a whole new lease of life to the club and there’s a happy atmosphere around the place. The squad feels more together and we’re all in it for each other. We’ve got the same goal and we’re all working together to achieve it!

What is your personal aim for the season?
Definitely to try and beat the appearances I had last year and to start as many games as possible. It’s important for me to continue to improve and develop as a player and push on to establish myself.
