Needham Market 0-2 Lowestoft Town

The Trawlerboys put in a battling display to win 2-0 away at Suffolk rivals Needham Market and put the disappointment of a 3-2 defeat at Kingstonian behind them.

In the first half, Town struggled going forward in the strong wind. The hosts created precious little themselves with the excellent Dean Leacock and the rest of the defence reducing the Marketmen to long-range efforts. On the one occasion the hosts did get through, no. 9 Ryan Gibbs shot wide when one on one with Ben Dudzinski, while the Trawlerboys best chance of the half fell to Jacek Zielonka who fired over. A further worrying sign for the visitors was when forward Jake Reed limped off before half-time and was replaced by Harvey Hodd.

Lowestoft seemed to settle at the start of the second period and created their best chance on 47 minutes when a superb 60 yard pass from Leacock helped set up a chance for sub Harvey Hodd whose curling effort went just past the right hand post. The Trawlerboys were much better in possession in the second half but it was the hosts who created the next meaningful chance when just after the hour mark Jack Simmons blazed over after the Trawlerboys failed to clear.

The 70th minute produced the most controversial moment of the match when Town goalkeeper Dudzinski was adjudged to have brought down an attacking Needham player and the referee awarded a penalty kick. He redeemed himself with a fine save from Darryl Coakley’s spot kick and sub John Sands put the rebound wide.

The match turned on 74 minutes when Josh Greenleaf replaced Shaun Bammant and just two minutes later produced a fierce shot into the bottom corner from just inside the area. Just two minutes after that, following a Needham free kick, Greenleaf found himself on his own after turning a defender inside out, he sent a rasping effort which went under the home keeper, and surely making a case to start against Harlow on Saturday. Lowestoft remained comfortable for the rest of the match and secured their first away league win of the season.
